LEWISTON – Verson F. Darling, 81, of Auburn, died on Friday, Sept. 2, at d’Youville Pavilion.

He was born on Aug. 23, 1924, the son of John and Esther (Gayton) Darling.

Verson married Carolyn Littlefield on Sept. 28, 1946, and they resided on the Stevens Mill Road in Auburn for 59 years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, auto repair and body work, spending time with his grandchildren, and “puttering around.”

Verson served with the U.S. Army 82nd Combat Engineers, during the Battle of the Bulge, and in Normandy on D-Day, receiving several medals and two unit citations. He owned C&C Garage in Mechanic Falls, and worked for 18 years at L&A Transit.

He was a self-employed auto mechanic and wood logger for many years. He drove the van for The Mustard Seed School, and was a volunteer driver for Community Concepts.

He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Dena and Brian McBean of Caribou, and Peggy and Billy Havner of Auburn; grandchildren, Jillian Elder, Erin McBean, Joey and Danny Havner; and “the apple of his eye,” great-granddaughter, Carolyn Elder. He is also survived by two sisters, Peggy Mills of Farmington, Esther Bragdon of Auburn; two stepgrandchildren, Tripp Havner, and Trisha Uroda of Texas; and his friend, Judy Fraser of Florida.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn; his mother and father; sister, Isabelle Sirois; and his brother, John Darling.
