Focus on maps
FARMINGTON – The Sandy River Valley Chapter, Maine Genealogical Society, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Farmington Public Library. Jack Battick, a member of the Maine society, will talk about “The Use and Value of Maps in Genealogy Research.” Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome.
Benefit barbecue
JAY – A chicken barbecue to raise funds for hurricane relief will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 10, at the VFW, 64 Jewell St. Meal tickets for $6 are available in advance at the VFW Post or by calling 897-5112.
The relief effort for Hurricane Katrina victims is also held in partnership with the Amvets and American Legion. All are welcome.
Contradance
FARMINGTON – A contra dance will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at West Farmington Grange. Music will be provided by John Kuehne and Friends. Admission is $5 or $10 family max. No partner is necessary, and beginners are welcome as most dances are taught.
Warm-up walks
FARMINGTON – In preparation for the annual Make Tracks for Kids Walk-a-thon, potential walkers are invited to join a warm-up walk every Tuesday in September starting at 8 a.m. at Sandy River Acupuncture at 193 Front St. On Oct. 1, the walkers will meet as a team at 9 a.m. at the UMF Health and Fitness Center to participate in the walk-a-thon sponsored by the Franklin County Children’s Task Force.

Sports clinic
FARMINGTON – Franklin Orthopedics’ sports medicine clinic is back and is for individuals of all ages who suffer from a sports-related injury, elementary through college-age students, as well as adult recreational athletes.
Appointments are made through physician and self-referral.
The clinic is held from 3 to 5 p.m. every Monday at Franklin Orthopedics, 105 Mt. Blue Circle (Suite 1). Franklin Orthopedics is a department of Franklin Memorial Hospital. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 788-9001.
