HARPSWELL – Eunice “Penny” I. King, 79, of Brickyard Cove Road, Harpswell, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 3, at her home.

She was born in Pejepscot on Feb. 26, 1926, the daughter of Frank and Blanche (Williams) Atwood. She was educated in Brunswick and Topsham schools.

Years ago, Penny was a nurse at Pineland Center in Lisbon and later ran Ben’s Lobster Pound with her second husband, Ben.

She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Patriots. She enjoyed baking and cooking, reading, doing crossword puzzles, going bowling, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She also enjoyed going to garage sales, traveling and visiting her children in different states. Her true love was children; she would stop and talk to the babies she didn’t even know.

She was a member of American Legion in Lisbon.

She leaves three sons, Bruce Pennell and his wife, Dwendy, of Midland, Texas, Richard Pennell and his wife, Kathy, of Harpswell, and David Pennell and his companion, Phyliss, of Twin Mountain, N.H; three daughters, Donna Thomas and her husband, Earl, of El Paso, Texas, Janis Smithborger and her husband, Tom, of Falls Church, Va., and Suzanne Mathews of Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepsons, David King of East Pittston, and Brian King and his wife, Linda, of Lisbon; one sister, Marguerite Smith of Brunswick; one brother, Frank Atwood and his wife, Elva, of Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Donald Pennell, in 1973; second husband, Harold Carter, in 1978; her third husband, David King, in 2001; and two sisters, Earlene Mears in 2002 and Evelyn Ekker in 2004.
