CANTON – Evelyn M. DesRoches, 84, formerly of Knox Street, Rumford, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 5, at Victorian Villa Living Center where she has lived for the past three years.

She was born in Rumford on Jan. 29, 1921, a daughter of Henry and Margaret (Gallant) Arsenault. She was educated in Rumford Schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School.

She married Melvin DesRoches on July 31, 1939; he passed away on April 15, 2001. She was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church and their guild. She and her husband enjoyed many years of traveling and spending time in Florida. For many years Evelyn and Melvin volunteered many hours as Santa’s helpers.

She worked many years at Lamey Wellehan and retired from Franklin Savings Bank in Rumford.

She enjoyed knitting for her family and devoted many of her homemade mittens for the church fair.

Surviving is a daughter, Ann Therriault and husband, Richard, of Norridgewock; a son, Donald DesRoches and wife, Marilyn, of Newark, Del.; six grandchildren, Kevin and Keith Therriault, Karin Carey, Christine Ruoff, Peter DesRoches and Maria Robinson; and eight great-grandchildren, Michael, Chase, Konnor, Kaitlyn, Christopher, GiGi, Rachael and Marshall.

She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin; a brother, Leo Arsenault; and two sisters, Louise Francoeur and Dot Comeau.
