SOLDIER POND (AP) – A body that was burned beyond recognition was discovered in a truck that belonged to a man who was missing, officials said.

Peter Daigle, 39, was last seen Monday afternoon at the store he owns, Lake Road Grocery in Soldier Pond. His burning pickup truck was spotted Tuesday afternoon off the New Canada Road.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the body in the truck was that of Daigle or someone else, said state police Lt. Darrell Ouellette. Daigle lived with his parents just a short distance from where the truck was discovered.

The truck was burning in a field when it was spotted at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. It took firefighters about five minutes to bring the blaze under control; that’s when they realized that there was a body in the truck’s cab.

The body was brought to the state medical examiner’s office Tuesday evening, but there was no positive identification as of Wednesday morning.
