FARMINGTON – Nettie Steward Eustis Morton, 100, of Rangeley, passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Sandy River Center for Health Care.
She was born in Phillips on April 15, 1905, one of 11 children born to John and Carrie (Gould) Steward. She attended local schools and married Earl Eustis on Dec. 30, 1924.
She worked as a housekeeper in various homes in Phillips. During the Depression, she and her husband raised a large garden and she canned many vegetables, pickles, and various foods and preserves.
After Nettie and Earl’s children were grown, she met and married Leigh Morton of New Vineyard where they lived happily until Leigh’s death in 1972. After her husband died, she moved to Farmington and then to Rangeley to live with her daughter for several years until she needed extended care and was moved to Sandy River Center for Health Care where she received excellent care.
She was deeply religious and while living in Rangeley attended services at the Rangeley Baptist Church with her daughter. While living in New Vineyard with her husband, Leigh, she became a member of the Strong Church of the Nazarene. While she lived in Rangeley, the Ladies Group of Rangeley’s Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for years remembered her with food and flowers at special occasions.
More than anything else, she was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always tried to keep updated on all her relatives and was concerned for all of them.
She is survived by her son, Earl Eustis and wife, Marilyn, of Phillips; a daughter, Maxine Sargent of Rangeley; eight grandchildren, Jane Stinchfield, Judith Lisherness and husband, Douglas, Janice Eustis, James Eustis and wife, Lynn, Jeffrey Eustis, Craig Sargent and wife, Sharon, Steven Sargent and wife, Dora, and Eric Sargent and wife, Kelly; 14 great-grandchildren, Robert Stinchfield Jr., Joshua Stinchfield, Patricia Werzanski, Tara Reed, Adam, Hilary and Justin Eustis, and Jamie, Devon, Regan, Alex, Christopher, Kevin and Casey Sargent; five great-great-grandchildren, Courtney, Samantha, Bryce, Lilly and Evan; several nieces and nephews; and a special loving and caring niece, Katie Wyman of Farmington.
