PARIS – Disregarding a construction crew working just yards away from their vans packed with equipment, a brazen thief stole several loads of heavy tools from the vehicles, police said Wednesday.

Workmen fixing the roof of Norway Savings Bank on Route 26 in Paris first noticed the thief around 9:45 a.m, and two of them sprinted after him, police Sgt. Michael Dailey said. But the thief got away, perhaps disappearing into a car parked nearby, the officer guessed.

The man looted six nail guns and a compressor before being spotted.

“It’s amazing he took as much as he did with at least four guys working nearby. It must have taken him three or four trips to get what he got,” Dailey said. The tools are heavy and could cost more than $3,000.

The overseer of the crew declined to comment. Dailey said the roofing company is Mullen Home Improvement, and he spoke with David Mullen. Bank officials would not speak about the incident to the press.

Dailey said the workmen described the thief as having a medium build and wearing a green T-shirt, blue jeans and a dark ball cap worn backward. He ran north on Route 26 toward the Paris post office.

Dailey said he thought the tools would probably show up in a pawn shop soon.
