PHILLIPS – At a special town meeting Saturday, town officials will seek approval to spend $49,650 for repairs to the town garage’s roof.

Town Manager Laura Toothaker said that after the garage began leaking badly last year, it was patched. When the leak persisted, the town began the process of hiring a company to finish repairs before winter.

If voters approve, the town plans to “take a down payment from surplus and finance the rest of” the cost over three years, she said. The town is working with roofing company C.O. Beck & Sons of Waterville.

The town meeting will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Middle School.

In addition, a public hearing has been scheduled following the special town meeting on an application for a Class V liquor license from resident Tom Evans.

Evans said he hopes to open a tavern on Main Street and plans to seek town approval for the project “before I really start putting time into it.”

He said that the tavern is “not going to be a rock ‘n’ roll club or anything like that,” but rather “a place where people can meet and have a good time … without having to drive to Farmington or Rangeley.” The public hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
