WASHINGTON – The Board of consulting engineers of the Panama canal met today. The discussion related to the size of the locks and of the canal itself. The members of the board have been invited by President Roosevelt to visit him and will leave New York next Monday on board the Sylph for Oyster Bay, where the President will entertain them at luncheon.

The question as to the type of canal to be built – its depth, width and height, and the number of locks to be used were all touched during the meeting, but no conclusion was reached.

50 Years Ago, 1955

If Maine wants to attract electronics industries, it must train more engineers and technicians in its university and colleges.

That’s what officials of two big firms in the field told delegates to a conference between Maine community leaders and 30 representatives of electronic companies in Sanford today.

Charles Odorozzi, executive vice president of the Radio Corp. of America, and Richard Purinton, vice president of the American Phenolics Corp. said the electronics industry tends to center where there is a plentiful supply of engineers and technicians.

25 Years Ago, 1980

LEEDS – They don’t throw a fancy “Annual Firemen’s Ball” like a lot of big city fire departments do. And they don’t have a special, competition drill team that they send out to fairs and rallies like a lot of small-town departments do.

What they do do is put out fires – as quickly and efficiently as possible – and not only in their own town of Leeds, but as a helping hand in any of a dozen neighboring communities.

The Leeds Volunteer Fire Department is made up of farmers, shopkeepers, millhands – hard-working people who don’t have much time for the fun and frills that are sometimes associated with being volunteer firemen.
