SUMNER – A Sumner man was seriously injured early Friday evening when he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bike on Gammon Road, Oxford County Deputy Brian Landis said. The truck driver was charged with drunken driving.

Ronald E. Hoffman, 46, of 166 Black Mountain Road was flown to a hospital, the deputy said, but the location and his condition was not known late Friday night.

He was struck by David Rose, 36, of Richardson Hollow Road in Greenwood, Landis said.

Hoffman was riding toward Route 219 when Rose pulled out of a driveway and hit him about 6 p.m., he said. He was thrown several feet, he added.

“He didn’t look both ways and didn’t see (Hoffman) coming,” the deputy said.

Hoffman, a lawyer with a practice in Rumford, had the right of way, he added.

Rose was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, said Landis, a drug recognition expert. Several full beers and a number of empty beer bottles were taken as evidence in the case, he said.

Rose was booked at the Oxford County Jail in Paris and is scheduled to appear in 11th District Court in Paris on Nov. 28.

Rose’s 1988 GMC pickup sustained minor damage to the front quarter panel, Landis said.
