LEWISTON – Simon Parsons scored a goal in the second half to give Bowdoin a 1-0 season-opening victory over Bates in men’s soccer action.
Despite an evenly-matched contest in the first half, the Polar Bears (1-0) controlled the pace of play in the second frame. Willie Waters connected with Parsons, who scored his seventh career tally for the game-winner.
Terence O’Connell had an opportunity to send the game into overtime as the Bobcats (0-1) earned a penalty kick with less than a minute to play, but his kick sailed high.
Maine 2, UMass 1
ORONO – Adam Chenault and Kyle Pacheco scored a goal apiece to lead Maine to a 2-1 victory over Massachusettes.
Chad Mongeon made two key saves for the Black Bears (1-3).
Worcester State 3, Southern Maine 2
GORHAM – Freshman Tyler Hopkins converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute to give Worcester State a 3-2 victory over Southern Maine.
Brian Andrade scored the first goal for the Lancers on a pass from Michael Rice. Henry Brauner scored the third goal unassisted.
The Huskies were led by freshman Sinisa Bajic with two goals.
Becker 3, St. Joseph’s 0
LEICESTER, Mass. – Will Pease scored a pair of goals to carry Becker College to a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s.
Tufts 1, Colby 0
WATERVILLE – Bob Kastoff scored 8 minutes into the second half on a pass from Mattia Chason to give Tufts a 1-0 victory over Colby College.
Anna Maria 2, UNE 0
BIDDEFORD – Daniel Gagne scored the first and deciding goal as Anna Maria College booted the University of New England with a 2-0 win in men’s soccer action Saturday.
Field hockey
Simmons 4, Husson 1
BANGOR – Tanya Rego factored in all four of Simmons goals with two goals and two assists as Simmons beat Husson 4-1.
Husson’s (0-1) lone goal came when Michelle Barden scored off a corner kick from Erin Brown.
Tufts 3, Colby 0
WATERVILLE – Freshman Tess Jasinski scored two goals to power Tufts to a 3-0 season-opening win over Colby.
USM 2, Westfield State 1
GORHAM – Kayla Vaughan drilled in the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation to give Southern Maine a 2-1 win against Westfield State.
Bowdoin 2, Wellesley 1
WELLESLEY, Mass – Lindsay McNamara scored the game-winning goal mid-way through the second half to give Bowdion a 2-1 victory over Wellesley.
Women’s soccer
Plymouth State 3, St. Joseph’s 1
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three different players scored for the Panthers as Plymouth State recorded their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph’s.
USM 7, Husson 0
BANGOR – Senior Liz Brunton scored four goals to lead Southern Maine to a 7-0 victory over Husson.
The Huskies also received goals from Julia Cyr, Katie Else and Danica Martin.
Colby 2, Tufts 0
WATERVILLE – Colby’s Laura Williamson scored a goal and added an assist to lead Colby to a 2-0 victory over Tufts.
Liz Morbeck found the back of the net with just under eight minutes remaining for Colby’s second goal.
Bowdoin 3, Bridgewater 0
BRIDGEWATER, Mass – Ivy Blackmore scored the first goal on a pass from Bobbi Dennison 27 minutes into the game to lead Bowdoin to a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater State.
in thier season-opener. Claire Cutting found the back of the net at 50:57 before Danielle Chagnon scored at 64:42 that gave Bowdoin a 3-0 lead. Bowdoin dominated the game allowing only four shots on goal.
