RUMFORD – Gov. John Baldacci and Congressman Tom Allen were the guests of honor and featured speakers at the Rumford Area Democrats’ Barbecue on Sept. 3, hosted by Rep. John Patrick, Claire Patrick and Maurice and Theresa Fraser at the Fraser’s home.
Baldacci spoke of the ongoing efforts by the state to assist with the hurricane relief in the Gulf region and addressed the issue of high gas prices and vigilance with which his administration will approach price gouging.
Allen spoke about the leadership of the governor in coordinating the Maine response to the BRAC process, as well as congressional response to the hurricane.
Also attending the event were Speaker of the House John Richardson, Assistant Majority Leader Bob Duplessie, Andrea Quaid representing Congressman Mike Michaud, State Sen. Bruce Bryant, Rep. Charles Harlow and Oxford County Democratic Chairwoman Cathy Newell.
The annual Buckfield Community Day on Labor Day found the county Democrats participating in several capacities. Bryant and daughters, Larissa and Logan, marched in the parade and spent several hours at the festivities.
Newell staffed the Democratic booth. Buckfield Democrats, including Terry Hayes, Gene and Cheryl Coffman and Rosita and Ron Friel, tended a variety of tasks for community organizations. Jim Miclon and Sarah Tripp operated a hot dog stand, Mike Miclon organized the music and entertainment, and their father, Ray Miclon, assisted as needed.
September events include a booth at the Oxford County Fair, a benefit supper for REACH on Friday, Sept. 30. The September meeting of the Oxford County Democrats will be held following the supper. Anyone interested in assisting with any of the activities may contact Newell at 875-2116 or [email protected].
