JAY – International Paper’s Androscoggin Mill employees and contractors have collected more than $19,100 for the American Red Cross hurricane relief fund, organizers announced Friday.

After watching thousands of people in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi left homeless by Hurricane Katrina, a group of employees was determined to help.

“Our hands can’t be there, but our hearts can,” said Gerri Harvell, Androscoggin Mill storeroom employee. “We wanted to do something to show our great care for the people who were impacted by the hurricane.”

Harvell helped organize a fund-raising drive at the mill during all shift changes Thursday and Friday. The team set up a tent with banners, photos and refreshments.

Employees and contractors raised more than $9,500 in support of the effort. And International Paper matched each dollar, for a total of more than $19,100 raised.

“The money will be used to help shelters provide support for the families to help rebuild their lives. Examples include hygiene kits; stuffed animals for children; food, water, clothing and other basic supplies,” said Angela Konicki, American Red Cross representative.

“Many employees have spent time in the impacted areas in the South, or have friends or relatives there. It’s a small world and we need to help one another,” Harvell said.

International Paper is the world’s largest paper and forest products company.
