LEWISTON – Eleanor Louise Whitmore, 90, of Ellsworth and Lewiston, died Sept. 11, at Montello Manor, Lewiston.

She was born Dec. 13, 1914, in Quincy, Mass., the daughter of Aubrey and Louise (Chapman) MacCarey. She graduated from Colby College in the Class of 1936 and attended Katy Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston.

She married Alvin Schoff Whitmore in Newtonville, Mass., on Sept. 7, 1940. She belonged to the Congregational Church in Newton, Mass., the Methodist Church in Weston, Mass., and the First Congregational Church, UCC, of Ellsworth.

She lived in Ellsworth from 1959 to 2000. She worked for the Soil Conservation Office in Ellsworth between her duties as a homemaker. She was an avid volunteer of the Ellsworth Library, the First Congregational Church, UCC, office and the Birdsacre Sanctuary, all of Ellsworth.

She enjoyed walking and reading, and was a patron of the arts. She lived at Schooner Estates in Auburn from 2000 to 2004, when she moved to Montello Manor in Lewiston.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey and wife, Dale, of Tucson, Ariz., and Jonathan and wife, Sheryl, of Auburn; four grandsons, Erik, Bruce, Sage and Pax Whitmore; five great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Jonathan, Edward, Boden and Madison Whitmore; and one brother, John MacCarey.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin, in 1990.
