BOURNE, Mass. (AP) – One of the convicted sex offenders flown to Camp Edwards from storm-ravaged New Orleans has been transported to a county jail, state officials said Monday.
The Public Safety Office said a warrant had been issued in Louisiana for the man’s arrest, and he was now being held on $250,000 bail at Barnstable County Jail. Officials wouldn’t give details about the warrant.
The outstanding warrant was discovered after officials began reviewing the records of seven convicted sex offenders who were among the more than 200 people flown to Camp Edwards after Hurricane Katrina.
Public Safety Office spokeswoman Katie Ford said three of the men do not meet the requirements to register as sex offenders in Massachusetts. The other three, she said, would likely be classified on the lower end of the spectrum – meaning they’re less likely to offend again.
Ford said the presence of sex offenders on the base doesn’t represent a “sea change in public safety” on the Cape.
She said there are 9,241 registered sex offenders in the state, with 322 in Barnstable County and 30 in Bourne.
