Crews wrap up turnpike work

LEWISTON – Maine Turnpike contractors working to construct new turning lanes and traffic control measures at the Lewiston interchange are scheduled to complete the project today by activating the traffic control lights at the intersection of the northbound ramps and Alfred Plourde Parkway.

Traffic lights have been in place for a week, but have only been flashing red or yellow until final preparations could be made.

The traffic control lights will be fully activated today with red, yellow and green signals. The flow of traffic at this interchange has improved with the construction of a right-hand turn lane on the northbound off-ramp, and a new left turn lane on the parkway to provide access to the southbound on-ramp. The new signals will provide better movement of traffic through this busy intersection.

Weather service sets open house

GRAY – The National Weather Service Forecast Office will host an open house for the public on Saturday, Sept. 17, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The office provides weather forecasts and warnings for northern, central and southeastern New Hampshire and southern and western Maine, including the mid-coast area.

The open house will include tours of the facility and give the public an opportunity to learn more about the operations of the National Weather Service in Maine and New Hampshire. Visitors can view some of the latest technologies and information available to forecasters, including the state-of-the-art Advanced Weather Information Processing System and the WSR-88D Doppler RADAR.

The National Weather Service facility is in the easternmost corner of the town of Gray, on Route 231, just south of Pineland Farms. Visitors are asked to park on Weather Lane. Due to limited space for parking, visitors are encouraged to carpool.

For directions or additional information about the open house, people are asked to visit the Web site at weather.gov/gyx or call the office at (207) 688-3216 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Professors discuss Berlin 60 years later

AUBURN – Bates College historians Liz Tobin and Steve Hochstadt will speak about “Berlin and the Holocaust, 60 Years Later” at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center, 74 Bradman St., Auburn.

The public is invited to attend the free lecture, which will be followed by a discussion.

The historians regularly conduct Bates fall semesters in Berlin. They led a student group from September 2004 through December, then remained in Berlin on their own through June.

Their yearlong Berlin stay included numerous visits to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and to Jewish Museum Berlin, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind.

Tobin and Hochstadt attended the May unveiling of The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, an extended field of concrete slabs in the heart of Berlin. The memorial, designed by architect Peter Eisenman, represents part of Germany’s effort to confront its past.
