WATERVILLE – Kristen Chambers scored a goal in each half on Wednesday to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 3-1 win over Thomas College in field hockey action.

Chambers scored at 10:02 in the first half and again at 64:00 in the second.

The Beavers’ offense controlled much of the game with a whopping 38 shots on goal and 21 penalty corners.

Amy Miles scored the Terriers’ (0-2) lone goal at 47:01 in the second half, while keeper Jen lane made 21 saves in net.

Bowdoin 8, Husson 0

BANGOR – Freshmen Tamlyn Frederick and Lindsay McNamara each recorded a hat trick as Bowdoin pounded Husson 8-0 in field hockey on Wednesday.

McNamara started the offensive explosion, connecting on a pass from Taryn King eight minutes into the game, and Allyson Craib and Hillary Hoffman paced the Polar Bear offense with a goal and an assist each.

Kate Leonard and Emileigh Mercer combined for the shutout, as Mercer stopped Husson’s lone shot in the game. Kelly Bocchino backstopped the Eagles with 14 saves.

Women’s soccer

Maine 4, Holy Cross 1

FALMOUTH – Erin Corey tallied a pair of goals to lead the University of Maine to a 4-1 win over Holy Cross in women’s soccer on Wednesday afternoon.

Corey scored both in the first and second halves, with assists going to Natalie Berry and Marie-Andree Canuel. Heather Hathorn started the scoring effort for the Black Bears (4-3-0) with a goal off a Holy Cross defender. Laura Harper rounded out scoring.

The lone goal for the Holy Cross (2-4-0) effort was netted by Allison Peters off a shot from the top of the penalty area.

Colby 3, UMF 1

FARMINGTON – Laura Williamson netted a pair of goals to pace Colby to a 3-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in women’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Libba Cox also tallied for the White Mules to complete the scoring.

Olivia Irons scored the Beavers’ (1-1) lone goal on a penalty kick at the 18:46 mark in the first half. Melissa Demerchant made nine saves in net.

USM 6, Framingham State 2

GORHAM – Liz Brunton and Caitlin Brown each scored a pair of goals to propel the University of Southern Maine to a 6-2 victory over Framingham State in women’s soccer action on Wednesday.

The Huskies (4-2-0) took an early lead when Eva Hanson converted a pass from Katie Else just 2:29 into the match to give USM a 1-0 lead.

Brunton doubled the lead at 9:02 when she took a pass from Hanson and slipped a shot past FSC goalkeeper Ashley Baker. Framingham State came right back 30 seconds later to cut the deficit in half. Silvanna Ortiz chipped the ball over the USM defense and Holly Boudreau ran onto it and placed a shot by Mindy Morneault.

Brown’s first goal off a setup from Bridgton native Danica Martin made it 3-1 at 37:42. Brunton combined with Hanson just 47 seconds into the second half to make it 4-1. Morrneault needed just two saves to preserve the win.

Men’s soccer

Colby 5, Husson 2

WATERVILLE – Bobby Abendroth tallied a pair of goals on Wednesday to pace Colby College to a 5-2 victory over Husson in men’s soccer action.

Logan King scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist for the Mules (1-1). King scored 10:25 into the game to give Colby its first goal on the way to taking a 4-0 halftime lead.

Dan Kierman, Abendroth and John McCormack also had opening-half goals for Colby. The Mules went up 5-0 when Abendroth added his second goal just 3:56 into the half. Husson (3-3) received goals from Kyle James and Chris Cacela.

Bowdoin 5, RIC 2

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College built up a four-goal lead and held off a late rally to win its home opener, a 5-2 decision over Rhode Island College in men’s soccer on Wednesday.

Simon Parsons opened the second half with a pair of goals, and Andrew Russo added a goal and an assist as Bowdoin (2-0) expanded on a 1-0 lead in the first frame. Kyle Teixeira scored two goals in a four-minute span to provide RIC with a spark.

Jadon Neves stopped 10 shots for the Anchormen (1-3), and Dan Rodrigues made one save in the final 19 minutes. Nathan Lovitz had two saves for the win in the Polar Bear net.

Anthony Regis and Kevin Mullins rounded out the scoring for Bowdoin.

UNE 1, Rivier 0

BIDDEFORD – Mark Regis scored in the 60th minute to lift the University of New England to a 1-0 shutout over Rivier College in men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

After the two teams played a scoreless first half, Regis collected a long service from Jake Merriman and tucked a low shot just inside the near post to tally goal.

The Nor’Easters, who had an 11-9 advantage in shots, had the best scoring opportunities on the day.

They hit the post once in each half. Steven Bishop needed needed only five saves to record his sixth career shutout.

SMCC 2, CMCC 0

AUBURN – Andrew Mack and Matt Loneri both scored goals Wednesday as Southern Maine Community College rolled to a 2-0 shutout over Central Maine Community College in men’s soccer action.

Josh Berard made 11 saves in net for SMCC (3-0) to earn the win, while Matt Lathem turned away 15 shots in net for Central Maine (1-1).

Southern Maine put both goals on the board in the first half, then kept its defense in high gear to ward off a potential rally.
