AUGUSTA – The Maine Greyhound Placement Service Adoption Center will hold its fall open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain or shine) Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18, at 249 Belgrade Road.

There will be a silent auction, raffle, door prizes, vendors, food, games, resale table, animal communicator, Maine State Police canine unit, Wall of Remembrance (for departed dogs), doggie spa, greyhound massage therapy and kennel tours.

All dogs are welcome; however, dogs must be kept on leads at all times – no retractable leashes. It is recommended that small dogs be carried by their owners.

Spurwink conclave

SOUTH PORTLAND – The Spurwink Child Abuse Program will present the 10th annual Northern New England Conference on Child Maltreatment on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 22 and 23, at the Sheraton Hotel.

The conference is designed to provide multi-disciplinary training to professionals who are involved in child abuse evaluations, investigations, prosecution and treatment. Participants include professionals from the field of nursing, mental health, child welfare, law, law enforcement, child advocacy and medicine.

The conference will be overseen by Dr. Lawrence Ricci, forensic pediatrician and director of the Spurwink Child Abuse Program, which provides medical, forensic interview and psychological child abuse evaluations and treatment to children throughout Maine.

Luncheon speaker

SOUTH PORTLAND – The American Lung Association of Maine will hold its annual meeting luncheon and award ceremony from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the Marriott at Sable Oaks.

The keynote address will focus on “The Health Care Cost of Air Pollution.” In addition, awards will be given to those selected by the association for their leadership in helping to protect lung health for Maine people.

Cemetery tours

NORRIDGEWOCK – The Maine Old Cemetery Association will hold a fall meeting on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Norridgewock Historical Society, 11 Mercer Road, hosted by the Historical Society.

The meeting will focus on the monument records of the late Marble Monument Co. which, for nearly 100 years, quarried in Norridgewock, made and set gravestones all over the state but predominantly in Franklin and Somerset counties. A tour of Norridgewock cemeteries will be conducted after lunch.

Scholarships

WARWICK, R.I. – Christopher Bannister, chairman of the Automotive Technology Department at New England Institute of Technology, has announced the availability of an automotive-related scholarship that will be awarded to individuals studying automotive technology in 2006.

The scholarships are available to students in two-year technical college programs and vocational schools and four-year college programs. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled full-time in a college-level program or a National Automotive Technician Education Foundation accredited automotive technical program.

Give to Red Cross

WESTBROOK – “People Remembering and Helping People” was the theme for the fourth annual 9/11 tribute by Maine’s credit unions to the six Red Cross chapters of Maine, including the chapter that serves Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties.

The credit unions paid tribute to the victims of 9/11, their families and presented checks in the amount of $911 to the Emergency Food Relief Fund of each Red Cross chapter. Visit www.mainecul.org for more information.
