GRAY – “We’d like all the daycare centers and schools in the Gray area to invite a firefighter to visit them,” said Jon Barton, chief of the Gray Fire-Rescue Department.

Fire Prevention Week will run from Oct. 9 to 15, and the department is setting up the annual firefighter visits at schools, daycares and other interested clubs and organizations.

Daycare centers should call the Gray Fire-Rescue dispatcher at 657-3931 to schedule a visit. Interested organizations can also arrange to visit Gray’s Central Station at the Gray Public Safety Building, Shaker Road and Seagull Drive, for a hands-on look at the fire trucks and rescue vehicles, as well as a program put on by the firefighters.

For visits, the department sends several firefighters and a fire truck and puts on a demonstration of firefighting gear and tools. Children get a close-up look at a firefighter wearing special breathing gear and are taught the basics of fire prevention and escaping from a house fire.

The department also passes out special books children can take home to share with their parents and friends.

Schools or other organizations should call the dispatcher at 657-3931 to arrange a visit.

The association’s annual spaghetti supper will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, following the fire-rescue open house at the public safety building. The trucks will be pulled out of the bays to make room for the supper tables.

A donation of $5 is asked for adults; $4, children 12 and under; free, under 3; $15, a family of four or more. Proceeds will go toward equipment and training.

Association members will have tickets available for pre-sales, and tickets can be purchased from the dispatcher at the public safety building.
