LEWISTON – A man suspected of stabbing another man Monday night on Pierce Street was arrested Thursday at his apartment near the scene of the attack.

Antonio Jose Abreu, 35, of 117 Pierce St., was arrested by police and a federal agent who went to his home about 9:40 a.m.

Abreu was charged with attempted murder in the Monday night knifing that left 23-year-old Michael Lagasse hospitalized. Lagasse remained at Central Maine Medical Center on Thursday. At his request, no information was being released on his condition.

Lagasse was stabbed about 7 p.m. Monday after a brief brawl in front of the apartment building where Abreu lives, according to witnesses. The victim then stumbled around the corner to Blake and Birch streets before he was taken to the hospital.

Police in Lewiston and Auburn searched for Abreu for days after the stabbing. An agent from the Central Maine Violent Crime Task Force joined the search and began watching the Pierce Street apartment.

Abreu was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail, where he remained Thursday night.
