PERU – Two Dixfield teenagers suffered minor injuries late Thursday afternoon when the car they were in rolled over on Route 108 in Peru, state police said.
Driver Carolyn Hutchins, 16, and passenger Tara Hawk, 17, suffered bumps and bruises and were treated on scene by Med-Care medics before being taken to Rumford Hospital, said investigating Trooper Scot Sawyer.
The wreck, which happened at about 5:15 p.m., temporarily shut down Route 108 traffic while Peru firefighters sprayed foam on the rear of the upside-down car where gasoline was leaking.
Sawyer said Hutchins was driving a 1989 Chevy Corsica east on a straightaway and talking with Hawk when a wheel went off the side of the road.
“She over-corrected, then over-corrected again, lost control, went into a banking and rolled over,” Sawyer said.
Both girls were wearing safety belts.
The crash was the fourth in four weeks in Peru.
But, unlike the previous three, Sawyer said it didn’t appear that Thursday’s wreck involved speed or alcohol.
“It appears to be the result of driver inattention and driver inexperience,” he said.
