RUMFORD – The primary objective of the Mountain Valley football team is to continue improving, and it clearly has plenty in reserve after pitching a shutout in a Campbell Conference game Friday night.
Senior running back Aaron Arsenault scored five touchdowns, including an 85-yard kickoff return as the Falcons rolled to a 51-0 win over Gray-New Gloucester at Hosmer Field. Mountain Valley (3-0), the defending Class B state champions, extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games. The Falcons have outscored opponents 126-6 in three games.
The game was never in doubt as Mountain Valley scored four times tin the first 10 minutes. All the drives started in Patriots’ territory.
“We knew that we had to play hard,” said Arsenault, who gained 139 yards on 14 rushes. “We had to come down and hit and yes, we want to better ourselves and play like champions. Everyone is gunning for us, so no matter what the level of play is, we need to be ready.”
Falcon quarterback Andy Shorey (2-of-4, 72 yards) opened the scoring with a 42-yard pass to Travis Fergola. The 200-pound fullback broke three tackles and sprinted into the end zone.
Gray-New Gloucester (0-3) hurt themselves by fumbling two kickoffs. Falcon end Steve Lizzotte recovered both fumbles and also blocked a punt that he caught on the run.
Arsenault and Fergola scored from 11 and two yards, respectively. “We still need to keep practicing,” Shorey said. “We still need to be able to execute. We started out strong, but the first eight minutes of the second quarter was sloppy, until we got things going again.”
Gray-New Gloucester QB Sam Christy completed eight of 10 passes, the longest was 13 yards to Will Rowe. The deepest the Patriots penetrated was on a big kickoff return by Josh Shobert to the Falcons’ 35-yard line.
Arsenault scored on a 8 yard run and also from 30 yards on the final play of the first half.
The Falcon defense was led by Brendan Bradley who made seven of the first nine tackles. The Patriots were held to minus-45 yards rushing on 30 attempts.
“I just love defense and hitting people,” Bradley said. “If I get my bell rung early, it fires me up. The team says Travis Fergola and I hit the hardest.”
Tony Cloutier scored on a one-yard plunge to close out the scoring.
