Cowboy crooner Kenny Chesney sang of how actress Renee Zellweger “had me from hello,” but Thursday the couple bade each other goodbye.
Reps for the pair confirmed the Oscar-winning actress and the country singer are having their four-month marriage annulled, but declined to give further details.
The breakup, first reported by People magazine, came just a week after Zellweger, 36, insisted everything was hunky-dory between her and her 37-year-old husband.
The actress filed papers Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court citing “fraud” as the reason for the breakup, but did not elaborate, People said. Her petition also asks that Chesney not receive any spousal support.
The “Bridget Jones” actress and the platinum-selling singer were married May 9 in a barefoot ceremony held at his home in St. John in the Virgin Islands. She wore a strapless Carolina Herrera wedding gown, while he wore a black Stetson cowboy hat. It was the first marriage for both.
The wedding came just four months after they met in January at the Concert of Hope tsunami relief benefit in California.
But even before meeting, Zellweger’s performance in the movie “Jerry Maguire” inspired Chesney to pen his 1999 hit “You Had Me From Hello.”
In recent weeks, the couple tried to defuse bombshell reports that their union was on the rocks because their busy schedules were keeping them apart. The Daily Mail of London reported that Zellweger and Chesney had spent only 15 days together since getting hitched.
“I’m happily married, but I don’t talk about it because I want to keep my precious things precious,” Zellweger told reporters last week when she attended the Venice Film Festival, sans Chesney, to promote her latest movie, “Cinderella Man.”
