School employees and visitors are now required to wear ID badges whenever they are on school property.

The Lewiston School Committee approved the new policy Monday night.

Officials asked for the policy as a security measure. They believe it will help ensure that every adult on school grounds is either an employee or a visitor who has checked in with the office.

Lewiston has about 1,000 school employees, including teachers, administrators and support staff. Many have had photo ID badges for a few years, according to Human Resources Director Tom Jarvis. Officials made sure everyone received them this year.

Durham: Pike gets paving pact

Road Commissioner Cliff Larrabee and Pike Industries have settled a disagreement on paving Cedar Pond Road and the town has awarded the 2005 paving work on local roads to the firm on its low bid of $37.98 per ton.

Initially, Larrabee had complained of problems with the pavement on Cedar Pond Road, and tests performed by S. W. Cole indicated there was not enough asphalt in the tar.

It was then learned that there was an error in the asphalt standards provided by Pike and used by Cole for testing.

Revised data show that the asphalt was within acceptable limits.

Pike did agree there was a problem with the wearing of the pavement on the road and agreed to add a one-inch overlay to it.

Durham: Crash bills go to owners

Selectman have approved, at the request of Fire Chief Bill St. Michel, a change in the way fees are charged and billed for Fire and Rescue responses to motor vehicle accidents.

Bills will now be sent directly to vehicle owners, rather than their insurance companies. The change is due to a refusal by one company, Progressive, to pay the bills, even though the fees are covered by their insurance policies.

Owners of vehicles involved in accidents will now be responsible for getting their bills paid by their insurance companies.
