Temple to hold High Holy Days

AUBURN – Temple Shalom Synagogue will hold services for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

The holiday of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins Monday evening, Oct. 3, with services at 7:30 at Temple Shalom. There also will be services at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, and Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Services for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12; and on Thursday, Oct. 13, the day of Yom Kippur, services will begin at 9 a.m.

A Yizkor (memorial) service for those who have died in the past year will be at 5:15 p.m., followed by the closing service for the Day of Atonement at about 5:30 p.m. All who attend the services are invited to a meal at Temple Shalom to break the Yom Kippur fast, immediately following the closing service.

The 10 days that begin with Rosh Hashanah and end with Yom Kippur are known as the Ten Days of Return, said Rabbi Hillel Katzir, the spiritual leader of Temple Shalom.

“All year, we run around doing what we need to do to survive. At this season, we take the time to remind ourselves that there is more to our lives than that,’ Katzir said in a prepared statement. “We remember that we are created in the image of God, to be God’s partners in making this a better world.”

Nonmembers of Temple Shalom are welcome at these services. First-time High Holy Day attendees at Temple Shalom, and all students, are welcome to attend as guests of the congregation; other nonmembers are asked to make a donation to the synagogue for their seats.

More information about attending High Holy Day services is available from Temple Shalom at 786-4201.
