A national pedestrian advocacy group will host a series of workshops next week that look at making Lewiston and Auburn better for walkers and bicyclists.

They are open to the public, and everyone is invited to participate in one of eight, four-hour Walkable Community Workshops, which will take place the week of Sept. 26-29.

The workshops are designed to help city and transportation officials figure out how walkable the Twin Cities are and how to make them better.

Each workshop begins with a presentation on walkable-city designs. It looks at national examples of what works and what doesn’t. Then attendees go outside to walk the neighborhood. They return and break up into smaller groups to talk about how the cities can improve.

Morning sessions run from 8 a.m. to noon. Afternoon sessions run from 1 to 5 p.m. The session schedule follows:

• Monday morning in the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center.

• Monday afternoon in the Lewiston Public Library.

• Tuesday morning in the Skelton Lounge in Bates College’s Chase Hall.

• Tuesday afternoon in Room C of Central Maine Medical Center.

• Wednesday morning in Auburn Police Department building.

• Wednesday afternoon in Auburn Hall.

• Thursday morning in Auburn Police Department building.

• Thursday afternoon in the Auburn Recreation Department offices in Pettengill Park.

The workshops are being sponsored by the Androscoggin Transportation Resource Center, along with L/A Trails and the Maine Department of Transportation. People may phone 783-9186 for more information.
