TURNER – For the last couple of days, Dave Morin had concerns about Tuesday’s soccer game.
After his Edward Little boys finished a hard-fought 0-0 tie with Lewiston on Saturday, Morin was afraid of the toll it might take on his club against Leavitt.
Two quick goals helped alleviate those fears against the Hornets. Tyler Dorris and Dan Pontbriand scored in a span of 32 seconds in the opening minutes Tuesday to give the Red Eddies a much-needed early lift in a 4-0 victory.
“We’re still emotionally drained from the Lewiston game,” said Morin. “If you had seen us practice Monday, I was worried about this game. I’m glad we got the two early ones because if we don’t get the two early ones, I don’t know what happens. After we got the two early ones, Leavitt outplayed us right up until we scored the third goal.”
Leavitt (0-6) tried to rally from the 2-0 deficit, but couldn’t trim the lead despite a variety of chances. When Billy Brewster scored late in the first half, the Hornets comeback hopes were dashed.
“We didn’t play extremely well, but we got four,” said Morin. “Last year, if we weren’t playing well, I’d know what the score was and it wasn’t 4-0 us.”
EL (5-1-1) got on the board just 3:31 into the game when Dorris cut inside and beat a defender to a pass by Tyler Snowe. Dorris slipped it by a charging Kevin Mulherrin in the Leavitt goal.
Just 32 seconds later, Pontbriand took a Carl Skillings pass and chipped it in.
“It’s the little momentum shifts that we need,” said Leavitt coach Isaiah Davis. “EL came out hard. They came out ready and scored early on. We came out hard as well, but we didn’t get the breaks. They got one, and immediately, while we were down a little bit, they got the second one.”
Leavitt was outshot 10-8 in the first half and had a number of chances to seize momentum. A Nick Bergoin pass off a dead ball was headed wide by Chris Rybeck. EL keeper Josh Mains later made a nice one-handed save on Kenny Maher and had another nice stop on Todd Berube, stopping it with his right hand and swatting it away with the same hand while falling backwards.
“It’s definitely been a struggle scoring,” said Davis. “We’re young. All of our forwards are first-year varsity players. They haven’t quite figured out the little things to adjust. I think it’s one of those things where we just need to break through and the scoring will build up.”
Despite Leavitt’s pressure, it was EL that scored the next late in the half when a Shea Flynn flip throw was deflected in by Brewster. Marc St. Hilaire finished off the scoring with 10:01 left in the game. He one-timed a cross by Shawn Hird.
