Open houses

PORTLAND – The University of Southern Maine School of Psychology and the School of Business graduate programs will host an open house and informational session for interested persons on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The School Psychology Program will hold an informational session from 2 to 4 p.m. in 407 Bailey Hall on the Gorham campus. If interested in attending, e-mail Rose Mahoney at rmahoney@usm.maine.edu, or call 780-5220.

The School of Business will host an open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Glickman Library on the Portland campus. The informational session is free. If interested in attending, contact Carla Harmon at charmon@usm.maine.edu or 780-4022.

UMA speaker

AUGUSTA – David Kirby, author of “Evidence of Harm: Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic: A Medical Controversy” (St. Martin’s Press, April 2005, $26.95) will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, in Jewett Hall Auditorium, University of Maine at Augusta. Kirby will give a talk on his controversial book and the response from the public, medical community and media.

Preregistration is recommended, with a special discounted rate of $5 ($10 at the door) for parents of autistic children, undergraduate students and persons with autism. School open house

LIMESTONE – The Maine School of Science and Mathematics will host an open house for high school freshmen and sophomores on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 9 and 10, at the campus. Visiting students will be hosted by students, stay in the residence hall, attend classes and learn about the school during a faculty/student panel presentation.

Freshmen and sophomores interested in applying for the 2006-2007 academic year are encouraged to begin their applications as soon as possible as the priority review date is Feb. 15, 2006. Applicants must take either the PSAT or SAT I test as part of their applications.

Catholic conclave

TOPSHAM – The annual Catholic Charismatic Conference will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at Sky-Hy Retreat Center.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Jesus, Truly Present in the Eucharist.” Guest speaker will be Fr. John Randall of Providence, R.I. Also participating will be Fr. Richard Rice of Bath, who has a healing ministry.

Harvest Fund

AUGUSTA – The Harvest Fund at Maine Initiatives is accepting applications for fall grant proposals. The fund makes grants to projects promoting sustainable agriculture and food systems in communities and working to preserve Maine’s small farm heritage.

The fund provides $25,000 in small grants each year. This fall’s application deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 2.
