LIVERMORE FALLS – Wayne H. Farrington, 55, a resident of Livermore Falls, died Friday morning, Sept. 23, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Lewiston on March 4, 1950, the son of Harold and Marguerite (Cressey) Farrington. He was born with Down syndrome and lived throughout his life in his family home on Route 17 in Livermore Falls.

Though not as frequently as in his younger days, Wayne still enjoyed going to a local store for a snack or a restaurant for a meal. He viewed everyone he met as a friend and greeted one and all with a smile. Wayne was one of the original people in the Livermore Falls, Jay, Wilton and Farmington area to participate in programming for individuals with mental retardation.

He was 12 years old before any educational opportunities outside of his home were available. However, from that point on, his opportunities continued to improve. He first attended the Little Red Schoolhouse in Farmington, followed by a program held at the Farmington Community Center and then the Chesterville Training Center. He moved on to the Sandy River Rehabilitation Center, a work-oriented program for adults with a developmental disability in Dryden, which later moved to Farmington and was eventually renamed Work First Inc. He continued to work at Work First Inc., to the extent that he was able until his death. It was a source of personal and social richness in his life.

His favorite place to be was in his own home. There he was surrounded by the people and things he loved – family, caregivers, flags and more. For the past five years, an ever changing but constantly loving staff of home caregivers had cared for Wayne in his own home. It is the dedication and caring of these people that allowed him to stay where he could be the happiest. His family will be forever grateful.

He is survived by his mother, Marguerite Farrington, of Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington; one brother, George Farrington, and his wife, Gail, and their children, Nicky, Sara, Ryan and Bryn of Nashua, N.H.; and one sister, Lynn (Farrington) Ouellette, and her husband, Dean, and their children, Rebecca and Jeff of East Jay.

He was predeceased by his father, Harold Farrington, in 1999.
