AUBURN – Helen Louise MacFarland, a longtime resident at 207 Lake St., Auburn, died Sept. 23, at Seville Park Plaza in Auburn at the age of 101.
Helen was born on Feb. 14, 1904, in Auburn, the youngest of seven daughters born to Eugene and Nellie (Hodgkin) MacFarland. She was educated in Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1923.
She was a member of the High Street Congregational Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was also active in the Parish Guild, the Woman’s Hospital Association the Woman’s Literary Union and the Auburn Art Club, and was a participant in the Maine State Retirement System.
She was the secretary to the principal at Edward Little from 1925 to 1946. She then worked in the Department of Education in the office of the superintendent until her retirement in August 1970.
She is survived by a niece, Phyllis Chapman of Burlington, Vt.; four nephews, John White of Kennebunk, and David, Paul, and Peter Gillis, all of Washington, D.C.
She was predeceased by six sisters, Lida Smith, Elsie Yates, Marion Tebbets, Corinne Gillis, Eleanor McFarland and Maude White.
