Dear Sun Spots: We surely miss Ouellette’s Market on Minot Avenue for a number of reasons. But we especially miss their bean special on Saturdays. It consisted of a quart of homemade beans, coleslaw and bread. Their beans were especially delicious.

Could Sun Spots please provide a list of places in the area that make their own beans and sell a bean special? Thank you for your response. – No Name, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: I remember a poem about Maine that began with the line “You’re just a rugged rockbound state perched on the nation’s edge.” The closing line was “I love you so, because you’re Maine and home.”

The poem was included in a little green history book of Maine, circa 1930. Does anyone have the poem? Thank you for your help. – Harold Allen, Topsham.

Answer: Thank you for asking. This is an interesting poem to read or reread, as the case may be, about this “rugged state” we call home.

State of Maine

You’re just a rugged, homespun state

Perched on the nation’s edge,

A stretch of woods, of fields and lakes,

Of ocean pounded ledge:

But rugged deeds and rugged men

You’ve nurtured for your own,

Much good the world has harvested

From the broadcast seeds you’ve sown.

And so, we love you, rugged state,

We love your smiling skies,

We love you for your deep-piled snows,

Your jagged coast we prize.

We love you for your lofty seat,

You’ve reared ‘neath heaven’s dome;

But best of all, we love you, Maine

Because you’re Maine – and Home.
