OXFORD – Albertha M. Sanborn “Al,” 87, of Oxford, died Friday, Sept. 30, with her family by her side, at the home of her son and daughter-in-laws.

She was born in Belfast on Sept. 17, 1918, the daughter of Samuel W. and Hattie M. Durost. She was educated in Belfast schools and graduated from Crosby High School.

Upon graduation, she was employed by McLellan Stores as a bookkeeper and cashier until her marriage to Laurence E. Sanborn. He died Feb. 25, 1995. They were married 58 years.

After moving to Oxford, she was employed by Robinson Manufacturing Co., and later became postal clerk at the Oxford Post Office for 25 years.

She was a member of the Oxford Congregational Church, Lake Thompson Senior Citizens, Oxford Home Extension and the Oxford Historical Society.

She was a friend to young and old, always interested in what they had to say.

She is survived by a son, Dennis and his wife, Olive, of Oxford; a daughter, Nancy J. Sanborn of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandsons, Laurence, of Oxford, William and wife, Becky, of Oxford, and Jay and wife, Lisa, of New Gloucester; six great-grandchildren, Kellie Sanborn of Malden, Mass.; Nick and Valerie Sanborn of Oxford, Jordyn and Dennis Sanborn of Oxford, and Jaykob Sanborn of New Gloucester.

In addition to fond memories of times with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the time she spent as one of the “goof-offs” was a most enjoyable time in her life.

Special thanks from her family to Androscoggin Hospice, especially Pam, Deborah and Elaine. A very special thank you to Diane McAllister for her love and wonderful care for Al, and her loving support to Olive and Dennis and family.

Al will be deeply missed by family and friends. Our heads knew it was her time to go, but our hearts wished deeply for her to stay.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alton Durost.
