The Department of Education has approved a new building project for Durham, said Jane Blais, chairwoman of the School Committee. The town will be reimbursed 49 percent of the cost of a new roof at Durham Elementary School, a previously unfunded project. The $249,209 completed roof project that the town had expected to pay for has been reduced by $122,686. Selectmen have signed paperwork to receive the state grant, with the balance of $126,523 to be financed through the Maine Bond Bank.

Durham: Board ups mileage rate

After hearing Chairman Wesley Bennett say the mileage rate for town officials who use their vehicles on town business was below the rate paid in other communities, selectmen decided to increase the rate to that allowed by the IRS, 40.5 cents.

Bennett said New Gloucester upped its rate to 48 cents per mile; however board members opted in a 4-1 vote to go with the lower allowance. The new rate takes effect immediately.
