LEWISTON – Post 22, American Legion, has as a community project the erection of a monument in “Soldiers’ Field,” Riverside Cemetery, Summer Street.
Custer Post 7 members, who served in the Civil War, are buried in that plot and some tombstones are missing and some cannot be read.
Post 22 has acquired the services of Glenn Gagne, who has a large collection of Custer Post 7 memorabilia consisting of pictures and original documents and letters written by members of Custer Post 7 during the Civil War. A majority of the members of Custer Post are buried in Riverside Cemetery.
Gagne has an original photograph of the members of Custer Post 7, Grand Army of the Republic, standing in front of the Lewiston City Hall in 1919. The post headquarters was at 198 Lisbon St.
Contributions for the new monument can be mailed to Jan Sites, treasurer, Riverside Cemetery Association, 192 Summer St., Lewiston, and she can be reached at 782-1681. For more information, call Jerry DerBoghosian at 782-5700 or 353-7435.
