LEWISTON – Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. will highlight breast cancer awareness at a press conference at 9 a.m. Wednesday in City Hall.

Guay’s public awareness effort coincides with The Mayors’ Campaign Against Breast Cancer, an initiative launched by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 1997. Nearly 250 mayors across the country will again this year recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Mayor Guay will be issuing a proclamation in that regard.

In addition, mayors throughout the country are promoting Oct. 21 as National Mammography Day, since mammography can detect breast cancer in its early, most treatable stage. Mammography also locates cancers too small to be felt during a clinical breast examination.

Health officials estimate that 211,240 women, as well as 1,690 men, will learn this year that they have breast cancer.

At the press conference, medical personnel will share educational information and informational handouts will be available.
