WATERFORD – The sixth 5K road race and chili cook-off took place on Sept. 25. The Bridgton Chamber of Commerce provided vendors for the cook-off, won by Dan Smith of Springer’s Store in East Waterford.
The One-Mile Fun Run had 28 participants this year, ages 3 to 12. Mark MacDougal, age 11, won first place with a time of 7:24; Connor Beebe came in second with a time of 7:33; and Kari Eldridge, age 10, came in third with a time of 7:36.
Hand-bikers had six racers participating. In first place was Rory McCarthy, with a time of 14:20; second, Steven Dodge of Wayne, with a time of 16:31 third, Chip Crothers of Portland, with a time of 17:43. Fourth, fifth and sixth places went to Wayne Caperson, Farmingdale, 20:02, Whizzer Wheeler, Waterford, 23:27, and Don Morin, Monmouth, 24:34.
The 5K race had 116 finishers this year and winning first overall was Timothy Even, 16, of Stoneham, with a time of 17:25. Winning second place overall was Stephen Hennigar, 19, of Sebago, with a time of 18:13. Third place went to Kelly Armstrong, 27, of Gloucester, Mass., with a time of 22:42.
Door prizes were drawn after the race. While the prizes and awards were being presented, motorcycles rode by in support of cancer research. It seemed especially meaningful as the race and chili cook-off will benefit the Tony Waldeier Scholarship Fund.
Waldeier was a long-time teacher at the Waterford School, who died of cancer in 2001.
This year $3,000 was given to six graduating seniors, who will each get $500 to help further their education. Proceeds from the race and cook-off help make the yearly financial awards possible. More than $7,000 has been given over the last three years due to the support of the 5K race.
