MONMOUTH – A group of 28 motor homes descended on Monmouth during the Monmouth Museum’s Apple Fest weekend and joined in the celebration.

Arriving at Monmouth Fairgrounds on Friday afternoon, a majority of the Maine Wheels campers attended a Friday night performance of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” by the Theater at Monmouth.

The next morning after, this writer received numerous comments re: such professional performances and the unique beauty of the hall itself. We explained that the hall had been built around 1900 by local architect/artist Harry Cochrane. We also explained that the majority of the cast came from New York, etc. and stayed in the building across the street (affectionately dubbed “Toad Hall”).

Saturday morning, a large number of the visitors had breakfast at the Monmouth Fire Station, then too a tour of the village and surrounding area. Many visited the museum’s various buildings and had apply pie and cider. There were numerous lawn sales and open houses.

That afternoon, more than 50 of the campers attended the turkey supper, sponsored by the Cochnewagen Trailblazers Snowmobile Club and Monmouth Masons, at the Masonic Hall.

The Maine Wheels, a chapter of Family Motor Coach Association, held its annual meeting and election of officers Saturday evening.

After coffee and doughnuts Sunday morning, the group heard a presentation by a representative of Good Will Hinkley. The motor coach association was originally founded at Hinkley long before the era of million-dollar motor homes and it continues to sponsor the home where less-fortunate young people receive care and education.
