GORHAM – Bates College scored twice in the first half, then played solid defense en route to a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday afternoon.

Terence O’Connell converted a pass from Kyle Rushton, chipping in a shot 19 minutes into the contest, to score the first of the Bobcats’ (6-1-1) goals. David Shear netted the insurance goal in the 36th minute to make it 2-0.

Bates had two keepers in the contest, neither Aaron Schleicher or Rob Munro registered any saves. USM’s (1-7-2) Chris Willard was credited with no saves as well.

UMF 2, Maine Maritime 0

FARMINGTON – Joe Conway scored the game winner in the 52nd minute on a breakaway to give the University of Maine at Farmington the 2-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy Tuesday.

The game ended after an own goal in the second half was scored in UMF’s favor. Brian Lemont made eight saves in net for the Beavers (1-5-1).

Joshua Heath stopped three shots for the Mariners (6-3-1) losing cause.

Field Hockey

Fitchburg State 2, Southern Maine 1 (2OT)

GORHAM – Sarah Proctor popped in the game-winning goal four minutes into double overtime to give Fitchburg State the push they needed to post a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in womens’ field hockey Tuesday.

Proctor netted the game-winner off a pass from Abby Ouellett. The goal capped a come-from-behind rally for the Falcons (8-1, 5-1). The first Fitchburg State goal was credited to Cait O’Hearn after a penalty stroke.

The Huskies’ (4-6, 4-2) lone goal came from Denise Minigell, after she drilled in her first goal of the season with 19:59 into the contest.
