McCurdy, president of the company and the promise of District Attorney Jerome that the insurance scandals certainly will be submitted later to an extraordinary grand jury, were the sensational developments in the insurance situation today.

50 Years Ago, 1955

The Maine motor vehicle department is swamped with applications for the new learner’s permits. From Aug. 20 to Sept. 20 examiners in the State have issued 1,811 permits to learners and the department has sent out 21,000 permit blanks to examiners.

Under the law passed by the last legislature anyone planning to learn to drive must pay one dollar, and take an eye test and an examination on highway laws before getting a learner’s permit that is good for 60 days. If the learner is not ready to take his road test at the end of the 60 days, he may get a renewal of the permit for 60 more days for another dollar.

25 Years Ago, 1980

A Lewiston physician has signed a contract with a major publishing house for the publication of a manuscript that will be the first popular health book about eye care available.

Dr. Kenneth Wolf, an ophtalmologist, signed an agreement with Harbor and Row Publishing Inc. in early September for the publication of a book called “Eyewise,” which he describes as a “patient education book.”

“A couple of years ago, I really had the feeling patients wanted more information,” Wolf said, “I started to write little pamphlets…Gradually one thing led to another. And now it’s about 150 to 175 pages of text plus 120 illustrations to accompany the text.”
