CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Kids are having all the fun, at least two days each week, at Karen Campbell’s art studio.
Campbell offers an after-school program for younger students on Tuesdays in which children are currently learning pottery techniques. She plans to offer programs in jewelry-making and watercolors later in the year.
“The kids are having a blast,” Campbell said during a recent interview. “It’s neat to see what kids will come up with; it’s so creative.”
So far, the children have designed pots, plates, flower vases and wind chimes. All works are fired on premises and painted by hand by each student.
On Thursday afternoons, Campbell turns over her colorfully painted studio to students from Carrabassett Valley Academy, who are also focusing on pottery. The older students are learning to “throw” their clay on the pottery wheel.
“Centering your clay is often the hardest part,” Campbell explained, “and it can take the longest time, but it’s essential they learn how to do that right. It’s very rewarding and they are all doing great.”
