NEW YORK (AP) – A paternity suit against actor Wesley Snipes was dismissed Thursday after a DNA test determined that another man was the father of the child in question.

“The good Lord says ‘Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.’ These are the tenets I live by,” the star of the “Blade” trilogy said outside court after the suit was dismissed by Family Court Judge Mary Bednar.

The woman who filed the suit, identified by one of Snipes’ lawyers as Lanise Pettis, did not attend the brief proceeding.

She was represented by the New York City Law Department, which said in a statement that an investigation by the city “was able to establish that, in fact, he was not the father. As a result, the city has moved to dismiss the case against him today.”

A lawyer for Snipes, Robert Bernhoft, said the actor had conducted his own investigation as well.

The woman filed a paternity suit in 2002 claiming she had sex with Snipes in a Chicago crackhouse and he fathered her 3-year-old son.

Snipes said in a countersuit against her that he never met the woman and that she was a “mentally ill former crack addict” who had made wild claims involving celebrities such as Prince, Oprah Winfrey and former President Clinton.

Snipes refused to submit to a paternity test, but a second man, whose name has not been released, agreed to DNA testing and was determined to be the father of the child.

Oral arguments in Snipes’ federal civil rights suit against the woman, filed late last year, were scheduled to be heard at the U.S. Court of Appeals in the 2nd Circuit in late November, Bernhoft said.

“What we have here is factual vindication,” Bernhoft said after Thursday’s proceeding. “Legal vindication is still to come.”

Snipes, an Orlando, Fla., resident, has also appeared in blockbuster films such as “Passenger 57,” “White Men Can’t Jump,” and “Wildcats.”
