PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A woman missing since Friday was found dead in a van near the Statehouse on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Yodit Kaleab, 25, was last seen driving her roommate’s minivan. Police called Kaleab’s death suspicious, but have not ruled it a homicide, Detective Lt. Hugh Clements said.
The state Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy was not complete.
After dropping off her roommate, Andrea Mitchell, at their apartment Friday evening, Kaleab said she was making a quick trip to the store down the street, Mitchell said. She never returned, worrying her family and friends.
“I knew that wasn’t Yodit,” Mitchell said. “She was a happy person. … She had no enemies that I know about.”
After Kaleab’s family reported her missing on Saturday, police distributed fliers with her photo and a description of the minivan she was driving.
An Amtrak worker spotted the van Wednesday afternoon outside the Providence train station, just across from the Statehouse.
Kaleab’s body was discovered inside.
Police officials said that Kaleab called a friend or relative on Friday night, but they would not characterize the conversation.
