Thorncrag speaker

AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston Art and Literature Club will meet at the usual time on Monday, Oct. 10, at the Woman’s Literary Union, 19 Elm St. Betty Crowley will be hostess, assisted by Mary Provencher, Mary Riley and Helen Archambault. Susan Hayward, steward of Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary will speak on “Thorncrag, Past, Present, Future.”

Special swim

LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine pool will be offering a Columbus Day swim special. The pool will be offering a general swim from 3 to 6 p.m. The price is $3 for YWCA members and $8 for nonmembers. A general swim is open to the public for all ages. The YWCA pool will also be offering water fitness and open swims throughout the day. All pool and locker room rules must be followed for the safety of patrons. Club Richelieu

LEWISTON – The local chapter of Club Richelieu International will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Rolandeau’s Restaurant, 775 Washington St., Auburn. President Guy Pelletier will be in charge. Members should attend.

Seniors to meet

AUBURN – Robin Dow Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Alden M. Gayton Post 31, 426 Washington St. Directors will meet at 10 a.m.

Members will enjoy a Halloween party on Wednesday, Oct. 26, with prizes awarded for the best costume. Tickets will be sold at Wednesday’s meeting. Tickets will also be sold for the Thanksgiving dinner at Auburn Methodist Church Nov. 9 and for the Christmas dinner Dec. 14 at Martindale.

There were 68 present at the September meeting led by President Dorothy Larrabee. Trip chairwoman Evelyn Sawin reported 32 had signed up for the Dec. 2 trip to Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, N.H.. More seats are available. Cost is $48. Anyone interested can see her or Lee Koss at the meeting for call her at home at 998-4577, Koss at 783-6396. Attendance prize winners were Frances Wentworth and Antoinette Darling; pot of gold, Roger Briggs, Patricia Donohue and Ralph Lashua. Bingo was played.

OES meeting

AUBURN – Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St. The chapter will honor past matrons and patrons, Ellen Broas, district deputy grand matron for District 4, and Shirley Corey, who will receive her 25-year pin. The meeting will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m.

Anniversary lunch

LEWISTON – New Beginnings, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is inviting people who attended programs when they were adolescents, as well as staff who worked here over the years, to a noon luncheon Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Multi-Purpose Center on Birch Street. There will be an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14.

Guest speaker

LEWISTON – The Ladies of St. Ann of Holy Family Parish will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Parish Hall. Guest speaker will be Lt. Lee Jones of the Lewiston Police Department, whose topic will be identity theft. Refreshments will be served.

Senior dinner

AUBURN – New Auburn Senior Citizens will hold a harvest dinner at noon Wednesday, Oct. 19, at St. Louis Church Basement Hall on Dunn Street. Cost is $3. Tickets must be bought prior to the dinner. The group met recently with President Virginia Levasseur presiding. New members welcome were Lorraine Duquette and Raymond Duquette. The seniors are planning to go to Indian Head on Nov. 10 for a Christmas program. Another trip is planned for Foxwoods to see Charlie Prose on Dec. 6. Tickets are $55, which includes the bus and show. Call Jean at 784-5264 for details.

Pot-of-gold winners were Ron Cote, Roland Roberge, Louise Cormier and Zephrine Dickenson. A light lunch was served and bingo played. Open bingo for seniors 60 and over will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, and Oct. 26.

Fitness fair

LEWISTON – The Fall Fitness Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Marshwood Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation, 33 Roger St. There will be free health screens, education, relaxation ideas, snacks and prizes. VFW fund-raisers

AUBURN – Thomas Trottier, commander of the Auburn Veterans of Foreign Wars and breakfast chairman, has announced changes in the annual Sunday breakfasts at the post home at 588 Minot Ave. Breakfasts will be served on the first floor on the first and third Sunday of the month starting in November.

The next breakfast will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. A door prize of a silver dollar from the 1800s, donated by Marcel L. Roy, will be awarded.

The post raised $87 at a recent breakfast for Auburn’s Blue Christmas for needy families and the October and November proceeds will also go to that cause. January and February proceeds will benefit Little League teams; March, VFW’s Operation Uplink; and April, VFW’s National Home for Children.

Woman’s band

LEWISTON – Wisdom’s Center at 97 Blake St. is looking for women who play a musical instrument and can read music to form a band just to have fun. Anyone interested should be willing to meet on a weekday afternoon. For more information, call 784-0155 during the day, and 777-1012 at night.

Benefit sale

MINOT – A lawn sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15, under the tents at 369 Minot Ave., across from the Minot Post Office. Proceeds benefit the students of Poland Spring Academy and the C.R. Field Trip Committee
