BUCKFIELD – Selectmen gave approval Tuesday night for Town Manager Glen Holmes to put surplus highway equipment out to bid.

Highway Foreman Phil Savage had submitted a list to Holmes of possible surplus items that included a 1983 Ford with wing box and nose gear, a 1987 International with wing box, a 10-foot wing for a plow truck, a 9-foot steel Bryant sander and sander dump bodies.

Selectman Chris Hayward questioned putting the steel sander out to bid because it might be useful to the town. Holmes said it takes different parts and is not compatible with the new sanders.

In other action, the board appointed two people to the Recreational Committee. They were Shirley Bennett and Diane Savage.

The board also accepted a petty cash policy.

In other news, Holmes gave a report on his three-day attendance at the Maine Municipal Association Convention. He reported on an exhaust system that he had seen that is needed for the fire station.

Holmes said an insurance company representative had inspected the burned storage building and will give him an estimate in two weeks. He showed the board a picture of a steel building that would have the necessary 16-foot door. He said he will have more information at the next meeting. The destroyed building was 30 by 80 feet.

Dick Piper asked the board to address the subject of vehicles parking on sidewalks. He intends to open a business at 9 Depot St. and needs to be assured his customers will have access to his business without having vehicles blocking the sidewalk. Selectmen Chairman Oscar Gammon said the board would check to see what could be done.

Holmes also gave an update on the Buckfield Rescue Department, saying that the department was on budget on its collections.

Holmes reminded people that selectmen’s and Planning Board meetings are broadcast live on local access Channel 7. This has changed from Channel 2.
