FARMINGTON – Bates College scored twice within a four-minute span during the opening half on its way to a 5-0 rout over the University of Maine at Farmington in men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

The Beavers (3-5-2) were outshot 16-4 during the contest as the Bobcats had the upper hand all afternoon.

Colby 1, St. Joe’s 0

STANDISH – Matt Shatkin converted a pass from Daniel Kiernan in the 85th minute to lift Colby to a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph’s in men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

After outshooting the Monks (3-7-1) 7-3 in the first half, the Mules (5-5) erupted for 13 second-half shots. Zach Starr needed only two saves in net to post the shutout.

Brian White had five saves in net for St. Joe’s before a collision sent him to the bench in the 58th minute. Auburn native David Rosquete took over and recorded two saves in just over 32 minutes.

USM 3, UNE 0

GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine received goals from three different players as the Huskies snapped a nine-match winless streak with a 3-0 victory over the University of New England in men’s soccer.

Greg Cox broke a scoreless deadlock in the final minute of the first half after the Huskies (2-7-2) were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out from the goal.

Sinisa Bajic doubled the lead in the first minute of the second half with a sharp header off a cross from the right side by Adam Bial. Cox also drew an assist on the goal. Ryan Colpitts scored the Huskies’ final goal at 69:39, converting a pass from Bial. Chris Willard recorded four saves to post his second shutout of the season for USM.

Field hockey

Bowdoin 3, Bates 0

LEWISTON – Margaret Gormley netted a pair of goals Wednesday to lead Bowdoin to a 3-0 shutout over Bates in field hockey action on Wednesday.

Lindsay McNamara also tallied for the Polar Bears (9-0) to complete the scoring. Kate Leonard needed only four saves to preserve the shutout.

Sarah Judice handled goalkeeping duties for the mighty Bobcats (3-6), turning away 10 shots fired in her direction.

Colby 1, USM 0

GORHAM – Mary Clare Snediker converted a penalty shot late in the second half to lift Colby to a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday.

Snediker notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season when she fired a shot into the upper right corner to beat USM goalkeeper Natalie Nimon for the game-winner. Colby (3-6) pressured the USM defense for most of the game, outshooting the Huskies (5-7) 14-1 while holding a 23-1 advantage on penalty corners. Molly Rice needed only one save to preserve the shutout.

Nimon played a strong game overall, registering seven saves and making some aggressive moves in the circle.

UMF 6, UNE 2

FARMINGTON – Kristy Veazie recorded a hat trick Wednesday to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 6-2 victory over the University of New England in field hockey action on Wednesday.

The Beavers (9-3) took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break and added three more goals in the second half. Mary Sinclair, Andrea Tyler and Kristen Allen also tallied for UMF to round out the scoring.

Husson 2, Thomas 1

BANGOR – KaroleAnne Emery had netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as Husson edged NAC rival Thomas 2-1 in field hockey action on Wednesday.

Emery took a pass from Sara McIntire and got behind the defense, putting it past goalie Jennifer Lane just 7:05 into overtime.

Emery put the Eagles (4-6) on top at the 13:37 mark of the first half off a nice pass from Janel Fearon. Fearon hit Emery in front of the net from the short corner on the right side of the goal.

The Terriers (4-5) tied the game in the second half on a nice goal from Natalie Patenaude. Kim Drosdik assisted Patenaude with a nice pass from the right side. Kelly Bocchino made three saves in net to record the win.

Women’s soccer

Colby 1, St. Joe’s 0

WATERVILLE – Laura Williamson scored with just 1:11 left in the game to lift Colby to a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph’s in collegiate women’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Katie McCabe picked up her team-best fifth assist of the season on Williamson’s goal.

McCabe’s long ball skipped past a St. Joseph’s defender and Williamson ripped a low, hard shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the net. Williamson leads the Mules (5-2-2) with seven goals and three assists for 17 points and has 31 career goals in her third season.

Former Edward Little standout Krista Wotherspoon made 12 saves in net for the Monks (7-5).

Bates 3, USM 0

LEWISTON – Molly Wagner and Kim Alexander each scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Bates to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Wagner got the Bobcats (7-3) on the board less than six minutes into the game, receiving a back pass from Alexander 35 yards in front of the USM goal and booming a shot high and inside the upper right corner of the net. Meg Coffin also tallied for Bates to complete the scoring.

Nini Spalding made two saves in net to post the win.

UMF 1, Maine Maritime 0

CASTINE – Jodie Welch rocketed a low shot that found the right-hand corner of the goal, giving the University of Maine at Farmington a 1-0 victory over Maine Maritime in womens’ soccer on Wednesday.

Welch converted a pass from Molly Hagstrom 33:29 into the contest. UMF moves to 8-3-2 on the season. Melissa Demerchant did not need to make any saves in the shutout.

Meghan Marshall stopped 10 shots for Maine Maritime (7-4-1).
