NORWAY – Silas Ivan Parlin, 82, of Norway, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in New Vineyard on May 21, 1923, the son of Ivan B. and Harriette Bud Parlin. He grew up on a farm in New Vineyard. He also attended New Vineyard schools.

He was an automotive machinist and welder. He was employed at Wilner Wood Products, Daniels Automotive in Needham, Mass., General Motors in Framingham, Mass., and retired from A.C. Lawrence. Since retiring, he worked in construction and plowed snow.

In his spare time, he was a stock car racer and holds the dirt track record at Oxford Plains Speedway. He built race cars while living in Massachusetts. He also raced in Canada and Connecticut.

He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Marines, where he was a ship welder and held the Golden Glove Boxer award while stationed in Hawaii. He was a member of the American Legion Post 182, a life member of the Elks Club in Franklin, Mass., a life member of the N.R.A., a member of the Maine Trapping Association, Oxford Sportsman Club and a member of the Norway Fire Department for more than 35 years, with a total of 62 years in firefighting experience.

He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He had a big heart and was always helping people.

He married Marie Dubois on July 24, 1941, and they enjoyed 64 wonderful years of marriage.

He is survived by his wife of Norway; two daughters, Harriette Alida Hill and her husband, Kenneth, of South Paris, and Dorrie Ann Bellebeau of South Paris; two sons, Silas W. Parlin and his wife, Theresa, of Richmond, and Anthony Ivan Parlin and his wife, Janet, of Plymouth, Minn.; a sister, Christine Paxton of Limington; a brother, Rudy B. Parlin of Livermore; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lucille Woigick of Norway, Laurette and Peter Nicholas of Norway, Aurore Marcoux and Albertiene Paranto, both of Canada, Pauline and Alphonse Dubois of Mechanic Falls, Germaine Martin and Madeline Dubois, both of Canada, Charlie and Reta Brackett of Guilford, N.H., and Claire Parlin of Lisbon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Marie Antoinette Parlin Guerard; son-in-law, James Bellebeau; sister-in-law, Shirley Parlin; three brothers, Roland, Lawrence and Milton; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Woigick, Gill Marcoux, Lucian Dubois, Gill Martin, Doris Abbott and Arthur Abbott.
