LEWISTON – Area veterans organization members and the public are invited to attend special services commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut on Oct. 23, 1983.

The service will take place at noon Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Veterans Memorial Park.

In the bombing 241 U.S. Marines and U.S. Naval personnel lost their lives while they were asleep. The services will also recall the fifth anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the U.S.S. Cole on Oct. 12, 2000, while she was anchored at a fueling dock in Yemen, Aden, with a loss of 17 crew members.

The program will open with singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by the assembly followed by an invocation given by Jerry DerBoghosian,

The “History of the United States Marine Corps” will be presented by Roland Cyr, past commandant, Central Maine Marine Corps League. Those assembled will sing the Marine Corps Hymn and the Navy Hymn and end with “God Bless America.”

The service will be held rain or shine.
