SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Two teenage sisters died Thursday when the SUV they were traveling in crashed into a utility pole.
Shauna Murphy, 17, and her sister Meghan Murphy, 15, of Southborough, sustained fatal injuries when the Land Rover they were in collided with the pole.
The accident, which happened around 1 a.m., also injured 15-year-old Melissa Smith of Northborough. It was unclear who was driving the SUV.
Police said power lines collapsed over the vehicle, forcing officers to shut off the electricity to get to the girls.
Police said weather and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash, but speed may have been. Officers were still investigating whether the girls were wearing seat belts.
Grief counselors were meeting with students at Algonquin Regional High School, where the teenagers were students.
