Without exception the best baseball game played in either Lewiston or Auburn for the past season came off Saturday afternoon on the Auburn Athletic park. The game was between the picked Lewiston nine and the Auburns and although in the game on Friday between the two teams the Lewiston nine won easily, Saturday’s game was entirely different. Lewiston won, but it was by the score of 2 to 0.

50 Years Ago, 1955

NEW YORK – The age of jet air transport was brought a big step nearer today as Pan American World Airways announced 269 million dollars in contracts to buy jet transports.

The contracts, the first by an American airline, were made with Douglas Aircraft Co., Boeing Airplane Co. and United Aircraft Corp.’s Pratt and Whitney Division whose engines will be used.

Donald W. Douglas, president of Douglas, said the sale “opens a new chapter in global aviation and brings the jet age closer to the lives of millions throughout the world.”

25 Years Ago, 1980

PORTLAND – The natural gas utility that serves Maine and New Hampshire joined Tuesday in a $170 million pipeline project designed to import Canadian gas to the oil-dependent Northeast.

Northern Utilities Inc., said the project would enable the Portland-based company to increase its customer load within existing service areas in Greater Portland, the Lewiston-Auburn area and York County.

The utility serves about 15,000 customers in Maine and another 10,000 in southeastern New Hampshire; including Portsmouth, Exeter, Dover, Rochester and Hampton.
