FARMINGTON – A film designed to illustrate the dangers of bringing genetically engineered trees into Maine will be shown today at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Roberts Learning Center.

The film, “A Silent Forest: The Growing Threat of Genetically Engineered Trees,” sponsored by the group GE Free Maine, will be followed by a panel discussion with activists Anne Petermann and Orin Langelle.

According to GE Free Maine’s Web site, gefreemaine.org, the film attempts to expose the threats “posed by the introduction of genetically engineered trees into our environment.”

Specifically, the film and panel discussion will explore fears that genetically engineered trees, designed to be more resistant to insects and herbicides and to grow more quickly than other trees, might take over natural habitats.

The film will be shown at 1 p.m. today in Room 023 of the Roberts Learning Center.
